Book Club Kete

Is your book club looking for new titles? Can't get enough copies of the book? Check out our Book Club Kete! Kete is the te reo Māori word for a basket or a kit. Our Book Club Kete hold books to enjoy and share with others at book clubs — have a read below to find out more!

What's inside?

Each kete consists of:

  • 10 copies of a popular title, numbered 1-10 on the cover
  • A tag attached to the bag handle with author and title information, and a brief synopsis of the book
  • A tally sheet for the book group leader or facilitator — so you can record which numbered title (1-10) goes to whom

What titles are available?

You can find all the Book Club Kete titles in the library catalogue, or browse them on the shelves at participating libraries.

They are mostly fiction with some nonfiction and all being popular titles published within the last 2 years or so. Have a browse:

The catalogue will tell you if the kete is available and which library it is held at.

How does it work?

  • Book Club Kete are available on a first-come, first-served basis
  • You may borrow one kete at a time for 6 weeks
  • Kete can't be renewed or reserved
  • One book club member is responsible for checking out and returning the entire kete, and is fully responsible for its return, as well as any replacement costs for lost kete items or a damaged/lost kete set

How much does it cost?

  • Book Club Kete are free to borrow
  • $20 charge for a lost/damaged book
  • $60 charge for a lost kete

Terms and Conditions

The terms and conditions, listed below, are to help book club members understand Library procedures and their responsibilities when borrowing Book Club Kete.

These terms and conditions are in addition to standard library membership conditions e.g. "I undertake to return all items borrowed from the library by the due date, and to pay all rental fees, loan extension fees, damages and replacement charges that are incurred".

Eligibility and responsibilities of Book Club Kete customers

  • All borrowers of Book Club Kete will be Wellington resident library members with current library cards.
  • One person, nominated by their book club, will assume the responsibility for the kete and have the books issued on their library card. This person is responsible for checking out and returning the entire kete, and is fully responsible for its return, as well as any replacement costs for lost kete items or a damaged/lost kete set
  • Kete will be issued by a Libraries staff member
  • The Kete borrower will be responsible for allocating the book copies to their members, recalling them back and returning the kete to the same library, with all 10 books intact.
  • The kete must be returned to a library staff member, who will check them for missing copies, book damage, etc.

Loan conditions

  • Individual titles with the kete can't be issued; only the whole kete
  • The lending period is 6 weeks, with no renewals
  • There are no overdue fees, but if, 30 days after the due date, the kete has not been returned, it becomes "lost" and the borrower's card will be blocked, as with other library items.
  • The fees for lost/damaged books will be:
    • $20 charge for a lost/damaged book
    • $60 charge for a lost kete
  • Kete must be borrowed from and returned to the same library, and can't be reserved or moved to another library for pick-up
