whodunnit at Wellington City Spybraries

A sneak peek at the April school holiday programme

We’re halfway through March, which means that the April school holidays are only a month away! Our loyal newsletter readers are hearing it first – this April our school holiday theme will be WHODUNNIT at Wellington City SPYbraries.

We’re planning a whole host of spy and detective themed programmes which will be run across our libraries – sorry, SPYbraries. You’ll be able to create your own incognito investigator kit, scour your local library for golden tickets, race against the clock to solve a crime in our deftly designed puzzle room, and much more!

Keep an eye out on our Kids’ Blog for our announcement with more information and the full programme schedule.

Summer Reading Adventure

Congratulations to our Summer Reading Adventure winners!

During the Summer Reading Adventure, our librarians gave out 2,270 prizes to intrepid word explorers across our fair city. Some of these prizes came along with another, hidden prize — the opportunity to put your name in the hat to win one of the Grand Prizes. There were 10 Grand Prizes up for grabs in total — four for kids, three for teens, and another three for adults. Our lucky prize-winners of the four kids’ Grand Prizes are listed below:

Grand Prize #1 – Into the Wild
Winner: Natalie, age 8, from St Benedict’s School and Tari-kākā | Khandallah Library

Grand Prize #2 – Science and Wonder
Winner: Michelle, age 6, from Wadestown School and Ōtari | Wadestown Library

Grand Prize #3 – Ultimate Artistry
Winner: Alin, age 12, from St Catherine’s College and Ngā Puna Waiora | Newtown Library

Tūhono: a journal of poetry by Wellington children and teens

Tūhono, Wellington City Libraries’ poetry journal for children and teens, will soon be opening for submissions!

From 1 April – 12 May, we will be accepting submissions of poetry from young writers aged 5 – 18 in Wellington City. Unlike some other poetry journals, as long as you follow the rules of submission every piece of work that gets sent to us will be published!

This year we’re asking you to write a poem on the theme of “Tūmanako | Hope”.
Check out our blog post for more information about Tūhono, this year’s theme, and how to submit your poem.

Rainbow Storytime with Queen Olivia III

We’ve almost reached the end of the Wellington Pride Festival, and we certainly believe in saving the best for last!

Join us at Kilbirnie Library on Saturday the 16th of March for an interactive and electric storytime with rainbow superstar Queen Olivia Lucretia-Bourgeois Connie St Redfern III. Visit our event calendar for more information.

If you can’t make our Rainbow Storytime, Wellington City Libraries will be attending Out in the City on Sunday the 17th of March! We would love to have you visit our booth to chat about literature or look through the badges and books we’ll be giving out.

Youth Night at the Library

As well as our programmes for younger tamariki, we also run monthly after-hours events for rangatahi.

Our Youth Nights are held regularly on the first Saturday of the month at the Johnsonville Library, and the third Saturday of the month at the Karori Library. Youth Nights are for rangatahi aged 14yrs-18yrs. They’re for teens who are into gaming, books, making music, watching movies, crafting, eating pizza, and generally just hanging out! Our Youth Nights are totally free (pizza included!), all you need to bring is your student ID and good vibes. Once you’re in, our spaces are yours!

Collection Spotlight
Covers from recent childrens collection picks.

Surprise! Us librarians REALLY love books (almost more than cats) and so when we come across a book about books?! Well, we do a little happy dance. Here are a few good ones we’ve added to the collection recently.

Once upon a book by Grace Lin (picture book; ages 4–8)

It’s a cold winter’s day and Alice is bored. A book beckons her (quite literally) into its pages, and she climbs inside and becomes part of the unfolding story. A book that celebrates the joy of reading and the ability of books to transport us into other worlds.
