The Summer Reading Adventure is here!

The Summer Reading Adventure for kids runs from 1 December 2023 – 31 January 2024 for children aged 5-13. Read books; write, draw or film reviews; and complete quests to earn all kinds of awesome goodies — and you’ll still be home in time for tea! Adults and teens can also take part in their own Summer Reading Adventures — visit the Summer Reading page on our website for all the info.

We’re inviting you on an adventure that will take you to locations around the city, into your back yard, down to the local library, and into the pages of more than a few books! Along the way, you’ll be reading books, drawing pictures and maps, taking videos, completing challenges, getting out into nature, and maybe fighting off the odd monster or two! You’ll also be earning all kinds of awesome prizes for your efforts, from collectible badges to ice-cream vouchers, books, family experiences and much more!

Pick up an Adventurer’s Guide from your local library, check it out online in our The Summer Reading Adventure kids’ blog or dive straight into the adventure over on our Summer Reading website.

Whānau fun for the festive season!

As the festive season arrives, we hope you are all having as much fun as the teddy bears of Tawa had at their library sleepover earlier this month! Before Christmas, we hope you can join us for some festive events!

Te Ara Pukapuka at Karori Park

The Summer instalment of Te Ara Pukapuka is spending December and January at Karori Park, complete with a new pukapuka for tamariki to read as they play and explore! Follow each page from one to the next as you wander through the park, taking in the gorgeous sights and maybe enjoy a picnic at the tables halfway along the track!

We have partnered with our friends in the Wellington City Parks, Sport & Recreation team, Te Māhanga Karori Library and publisher Scholastic New Zealand to bring you a fabulous reorua bilingual story — Tama and the Taniwha /  Ko Tama me te Taniwha written by Melanie Koster, illustrated by Monica Koster and translated into Te Reo Māori by Pānia Papa. Check out our blog to learn more about Te Ara Pukapuka!

Author Spotlight
image featuring book covers of Akiko Miyakoshi books. muted illustrations of figures in a city and a forest, respectively.

We are big fans of the author Akiko Miyakoshi. She writes and illustrates the most dreamy, otherworldly picture books.

Using a muted colour palette and textural drawing style, her books often feature kind, human-like animals and are an enchanting mix of both the magical and the everyday experiences of childhood. We particularly recommend The way home in the night and The tea party in the woods as perfect for cuddling up and reading at bedtime.
