The Bad Smell Hotel - Book Launch

Karori Library and The Cuba Press warmly invite you to the book launch of The Bad Smell Hotel, by father-daughter duo Rajorshi Chakraborti and Leela (age 11)!

The duo came up with the idea of the book during the 2020 lockdown, and their story is set in the not-too-distant future, where society is contending with mysterious bouts of uncontrollable farting! The forthcoming book is marvellously illustrated by Dan Mills.

8–23 April
Have you ever thought that perhaps you might like to meet a llama at the library? What about a penguin? What if we asked you to design your own animals — would they have claws and scales, or bright purple fur? Is it possible to use LEGO® to build a realistic habitat for a mythological beast? How good would a walking, talking animal be at playing D&D?

Whatever your interests, something wild, mysterious, fascinating or exciting awaits you in Te Ao Kararehe: The World of Animals.

The WCL eBook Club: The Drinking Game by Guyon Espiner

Each month, Wellington City Libraries highlights a specially chosen unlimited eBook or audiobook pick from our Libby collection for discussio.! For April 2023, the WCL eBook Club pick is The Drinking Game by Guyon Espiner. Reserve your copy with your library card through Libby.

'This is real, it is raw, and it lays out the truth about booze.' - Patrick Gower

'Thought-provoking but never preachy, Espiner blends personal experience with his formidable journalism talents as he dissects the role of booze in our lives.' - Jack Tame

Ever wondered why it always seems like a good time for a drink? Four years ago, investigative journalist Guyon Espiner gave up drinking alcohol. He had been a heavy yet controlled drinker since his teens - abstaining three nights a week but making up for it the other four. One morning he woke up after a big night and decided he'd had enough and he quit - no AA, no support groups. Not drinking has given Guyon a new perspective on our relationship with alcohol in Aotearoa, and a lot of it is disturbing. The Drinking Game investigates the alcohol industry: the power, politics and lobbying behind our most harmful drug. (Adapted from catalogue)

Reserve a carbon dioxide meter for free!

You can now borrow CO2 meters from the library for free to help you monitor your indoor air quality levels. Have a read below to find out more about this service!

Air quality is taonga and is essential to human health and wellbeing. While outdoor air quality will always influence indoor air quality levels, the vast amount of our daily over-exposure to carbon dioxide (CO2) unwittingly occurs in poorly ventilated indoor environments.

How does it work?

  • CO2 meters are free to borrow.
  • You can borrow one CO2 meter at a time for 10 days.
  • CO2 meters can’t be renewed.
  • CO2 meters can be picked up in person or reserved online through the catalogue.
  • To reserve, choose your preferred branch and when it’s ready to collect, pick it up from a librarian at the library desk.
  • Please return your CO2 monitor directly to a librarian to avoid damage in the returns chute
