Wellington Music Interview: The Eighth Note - My Cosmic Girl

By Mark

Eight quick questions with Pо̄neke band, My Cosmic Girl.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
We’re My Cosmic Girl, a 5 piece folk rock band that formed in Pōneke! We write music that makes us feel joyful, alive and touches on the best parts about being a human!

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?

We’ve just finished recording our first run of recorded work! It’s due to all be out this year, with our latest single, 'Psychic' released in August!

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?

Instagram or our TikTok. You can also stream us wherever you listen to music!

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?

Hard to summarise for 5 of us, but the albums with the most cross over between us is probably:

Carole King - Tapestry

Radiohead - In Rainbows

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?

NZSO!! Need we say more!?

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
There’s definitely something special about Moon Bar and Valhalla, probably because you can still see everyone’s faces in the crowd with the lights on!

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?

A lot of our current set list are songs that Ella (lead vocalist) has written that she brought to the band to expand on, but now that we have been playing together for three years it’s been a natural progression to start writing the songs from scratch together. It’s now kind of this perfect balance of these two writing styles and it works for us super well. We’ve yet to spend heaps of time writing a song because writing together comes so naturally to us as a band.

Where/when is your next gig?

November 29th: WET DENIM - 'ON THE LINE' TOUR - TE WHANGANUI-A-TARA, WELLINGTON.
