Summer Reading Adventure: How to draw lines for an Ozobot

By Claire

One of our challenges for the tamariki of Pōneke to complete over the summer is to visit a library and draw the outline of a sea creature for an Ozobot to follow along. But what exactly is an Ozobot?

The Summer Reading Adventure activity Ozo-tastic! requires you to draw the outline of a sea creature, and then see if an Ozobot can follow it.

An Ozobot is a tiny little robot who follows lines drawn on paper. It has a sensor that reads colours, and patterns of colours can ‘code’ the Ozobots to do different things (speed up, spin around, turn left at an intersection etc.) For this task, it just needs to follow a line that you've drawn, but it can take some practice to draw a line that's perfect for an Ozobot.

If you're ready to take on the challenge, here's what to do!

The first thing you need to do is to visit your local library.

Please note that Te Awe Library is not able to host this activity.
Karori, Cummings Park and Khandallah Libraries are only able to host this activity 10-12pm and 3-5pm.
All other branches should be able to facilitate the activity during their opening hours from 1 December 2024 – 31 January 2025.

When you're at the library, go and grab a piece of paper and a marker pen from the desk.

When you’re drawing a line for the Ozobot to follow, you want to use the thickest part of the marker.

Your line should be about 1cm wide, and make sure to draw smooth lines.

Examples of a good wide line for an ozobot to follow, and a line that's ttoo thin for an ozobot to follow.

If you turn corners too sharply, the Ozobot may struggle to follow them.

This is trial and error. Give a simple fish shape a go first. If you want to try something harder afterwards – all good!

When you’ve finished your sea creature, take it up to the desk and the librarian will test your drawing with the Ozobot.
