Summer Reading Adventure: How to create an acrostic poem
One of the activities we're challenging the tamariki of Pōneke to complete over the summer is to write an acrostic poem for the phrase "Summer Reading Adventure". But what exactly is an acrostic poem?
An acrostic is a form of poem that is written using the first letters of a word, or phrase – usually the words you use for the poem will link in meaning to the initials used to make the acrostic.
You can write a single word for each initial, or you can write a short phrase or sentence
If you were writing an acrostic poem for the word FRIENDS, you might write:
F unny
R eassuring
I ndividual
E xcellent
N ice
D evoted
S pecial
All of these words might describe your friends! Or how you try to act as a friend.
The Summer Reading Adventure challenge is to write an acrostic for the phrase Summer Reading Adventure. Think about words or phrases that describe things you've done or want to do this summer, or words or phrases that are related to things you're doing on your own Summer Reading Adventure.
If you're having trouble thinking of a word that starts with the right letter for your acrostic, you might want to look through a thesaurus.
A thesaurus is a bit like a dictionary, except instead of explaining the meaning of a word it gives you a list of synonyms for each word. A synonym is a word that has the same meaning as another. Think of words like good and great, cold and chilly, or funny and hilarious.
If you have a word that you really want to use, but it starts with the wrong letter, you can use a thesaurus to find a word with a same or similar meaning to add to your acrostic.
We look forward to reading your awesome poetry 😊
