Mate Wareware - Dementia friendly book collection

We now have Dementia | Mate Wareware friendly books available. The collection consists of books in large print and are aimed at those with dementia/mild cognitive impairment.

Wellington City Libraries is pleased to announce that in addition to the “Memory bags | He Kete Pupuri Mahara”, we now have Dementia | Mate wareware friendly books available. Book topics include favourite sayings, poems, animals and proverbs.

Illustrated nature poetry : an anthology
This is a selection of classic British nature poetry.

The "Unforgettable Notes" series of books were created to help ensure that people who have memory or concentration challenges can continue to enjoy reading or being read to. The books pair evocative photographs with limited text on a page.

The garden party & the doll's house / Claridge, Gillian

This is an adaptation of two of Katherine Mansfield’s best loved short stories: "The Garden Party" and "The Doll’s House." The book is illustrated with art by Paul Cezanne, Gustav Klimt, August Macke, Amedeo Modigliani, and Vincent Van Gogh.

Dovetale Press adapts books for readers who might find standard books difficult because of certain cognitive impairment. Classic literature has been adapted by an applied linguist, Dr Gillian Claridge, and a psychogeriatrician, Dr Sally Rimkeit.

The book of joy and gratitude / Kinnest, Joy

In this extra simple picture book, the focus is on items and activities that bring joy to elderly seniors.

These specially designed picture books can be a useful tool to help promote conversation and dialogue. The pictures act as a conversation starter or a memory prompt for people reading alone, in group settings, or with a visitor.

Looking back at... : the Beatles / Singleton, Matt

Matt Singleton has written a simplified biography of The Beatles that covers their journey from the start of the band through to the breakup.

There are many bonus features with the book, including: access to a free audio version, which includes excerpts from the music of The Beatles and is read by acclaimed actor Bill Nighy, quizzes, facts, and their discography.

The pages are written in rhyming large print. They can be read individually, or collectively as a ‘story’. There are also simplified summaries for those with more advanced dementia.
