Author Interview: Becky Manawatu

By Neil

We chat to author Becky Manawatu about her new novel, Kataraina.

Kataraina is one of the most eagerly anticipated books of the year and has already taken critics and the bestseller charts by storm. The novel gives voice to Kataraina, one of the characters in Auē, and also her whānau’s journey. This multilayered novel moves through layers of time and history and, in doing so, weaves a rich literary tapestry. It is an exceptional work that explores non-linear time and its relationship to memory. It also explores the horror of domestic violence in an unflinching, yet compassionate, way.

Becky Manawatu (Ngāi Tahu) was born in Nelson, raised in Waimangaroa and lived in Germany and Italy before returning to the West Coast with her family. Auē was her first novel.

We were thrilled when Becky took time out from her very busy schedule to discuss Kataraina and we wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to her. Becky will be doing an event at the wonderful Verb festival on
